A Taste of Italy

After traveling throughout Spain this past fall, I’ve decided that the next place I would like to travel to is Italy.  Beyond the exquisite architecture, the food is to die for.   Since it looks like that dream won’t be occurring anytime soon, we decided to bring a little Italy to Southern California and make our own pizza pies.Image

Trader Joe’s has all the ingredients you need (and beyond) to create the perfect Italian dinner.  We have experimented with the pre-made pizza dough along with the usual topping suspects: pepperoni, cheese, marinara sauce, pineapple, and Canadian bacon.   I’ve wanted to test out the wheat, but this request has been shot down by Mom & Meghan a number of times.  One day, one day.

Today, we stumbled upon our best creation yet: garlic/herb crust, shredded mozzarella, spinach & garlic chicken sausage, peppers, and onion.  Meghan sautéed the chicken sausage and peppers for a few minutes before adding it to the herbed crust.  From there, it should be baked in the oven at 425 for about 15 minutes.

If only we had a fancy pizza grill to throw this on.  I’ll just add that to the list for my dream home 🙂

“A world devoid of tomato soup, tomato sauce, tomato ketchup and tomato paste is hard to visualize. Could the tin and processed food industries have got where they have without the benefit of the tomato compounds which colour, flavour, thicken and conceal so many deficiencies? How did the Italians eat spaghetti before the advent of the tomato? Was there such a thing as tomato-less Neapolitan pizza?”
