Green Monster…Finally

At the beginning of the week, I had prepared only three breakfast bowls so that Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the days I have classes, I would have breakfast ready to go.  I didn’t really plan for Tuesday or Thursday or the fact that I might be craving one all throughout my workout.   Instead, I decided to experiment with a few smoothies. Tuesday, I decided to make my own Pumpkin Frappacuino Smoothie, which was all right except for the fact that I realized I had been using Pumpkin Pie Filling and the coffee grounds I was using for flavor were extremely caffeinated.  It sort of left me buzzing and jumpy throughout the morning.  Maybe I’ll leave it to the pros to make my pumpkin coffee.

Pumpkin Smoothie/Frappacuino
1/3 cup pumpkin (I guess I’ve been using Pumpkin Pie Filler instead of pumpkin so no wonder it was tasting so good)
1/3 cup Greek yogurt (Chobani’s plain was my choice)
2 Tbsp pumpkin flavored coffee (might be better brewed on its own)
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice
1 Tbsp flaxseed/chia seed
1/4 cup oats

This morning I decided to take on the challenge of the Green Monster again and I did it! I successfully created a smoothie that includes greens and doesn’t taste absolutely terrible. Everyone claims they can’t taste the spinach in the smoothie but I must have overly sensitive taste buds because honestly, a bowl of mixed greens doesn’t exactly sound appetizing in the morning.  The first time I attempted the smoothie, I was using one of those personal blenders, the ones that make one serving and you are good to go.  Well, it was a knock-off of the Magic Bullet so of course it wouldn’t work properly.  I ended up taking it back to Target and investing in a more expensive (but still cheap-ish quality) blender. So far I have been able to blend my smoothies, but only if I stick something in to get things moving.  Yes, yes, not the safest idea and I’ve been ok so far except the other day when I saw the spatula was missing a piece of rubber.  That would make for an interesting breakfast.

I believe my success this morning was due in part to the massive spoonful of cocoa powder I included.  I really can do smoothies every so often, mostly because I prefer my breakfast bowls, but including Greek yogurt helps pump up the volume and flavor.

Black Cherry Green Monster
1 scoop chocolate protein powder (~1/2 scoop works too)
1 scoop cocoa powder
¾ cup frozen fruit (I used the cherry berry mix from TJ’s along with a few frozen figs)
¼ cup oats
1 Tbsp flaxseed/chia seed
1 handful of spinach (fresh/frozen – I use frozen to add a thicker consistency)
1/3 cup Greek Yogurt (Chobani Black Cherry)
Dash of milk to help things start moving

I really should start looking into other breakfast ideas, especially the ones I can prepare at the beginning of the week and place in the fridge. Suggestions?
