NEW YORK, Get Ready for this Cali Gal

There it is.  The information I’ve been hinting towards the past few days.  I’ve actually known for the past nine months that I’ve wanted to move to New York.  This is a huge leap for me since a few years ago, I didn’t consider living anywhere other than Southern California.  Why am I making such a dramatic change?  (Especially when most of my cohorts are simply moving north to San Francisco)  Well, I was ready for a change and I knew that if I didn’t make the leap now, I would regret it down the line.  I’m at a point in my life where I can uproot and move across the country.  You’d actually be surprised that a number of other people I know are doing the same thing.

Secondly, I’ve always had an interest in sales.  The three biggest sales industries are located in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.  I’ve done my time in Los Angeles and thought “why not?” to New York.

On another note, you may wonder why a girl born and raised in California wants to leave the beautiful sunny days and lack of seasons for brutal humidity and wicked winters.  I’m up for a challenge, I’d like to build a thicker skin, there’s some joy and beauty in having different season, and it will certainly teach me to love California that much more.

You’d really be surprised at some of the comments that are made when I tell people where I’m moving.  You would think that I’ve lived in a bubble my entire life and have never heard of New York until this past December.

  • Yes, I know there will be tough times ahead.  Life is not all butterflies and daisies and it is NORMAL to have good and bad times.
  • Yes, I know there are seasons meaning extreme hot and cold conditions
  • No, this isn’t forever, but I’m willing to spend a couple years experiencing something different.
  • No I don’t like the whole man-eat-man-find housing experience but whatever.  That’s life.
  • Yes I know I’ll have to be proactive in meeting people
  • Yes, I know it’s a city. (That one really got me to roll my eyes)

And for anyone interested, it’s ranked as one of the top 10 best cities for cyclists.  I guess I could figure out ways to bring Freddy Firecracker (my road bike…yes I name everything) back east with me. Although, I may avoid the bike commute in the winter.  Still not 100% ready for that 🙂  I am excited to meet different people through running groups and possibly other group get-togethers.

Oh and I’m STOKED to explore all the different food places.  My sister even found a Buzzfeed article where certain foods have their own stores.  Noteworthy ones include: Mac and cheese, Chobani, Rice Krispy Treats, and peanut butter.  I may not be able to afford all these splurges due to the high cost of living, but I could always just live off an eggplant a day 😉 Just kidding.  But really, the eggplants will be a staple in my diet.

Have you ever made a big change in your life?  How did people react?

  1. IM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!! We will finally get to meet in person and if you need someone to accompany you to s’mac, I’m your girl. That place is gold. Ahhhhh you’re going to love the east coast 🙂

  2. ahhhh this is AWESOME! seriously. great for you. what an experience you have ahead 🙂 after graduating college last year i moved to a new city. it was only an hour 45 minutes away from my parents but i was the only one of my friends (high school and college) to do so. people were like “um but why??” i knew i wanted to live away and try out city living. moving home -for me- would have been a major regression.

  3. Congrats! After wanting to do it for the past 3 years, I’m actually contemplating the same move…I just spent a week in New York, 3 days of which were in the city, and I love it. Such an exciting place, and I am envious that you’ve made the plunge! Can’t wait to hear more about it, maybe I will be joining you soon 🙂

    • How fun! Yes your adventures looked awesome! You’ll have to keep me updated and maybe we can meet up. Two California bloggers meet up thousands of miles away 😉

  4. Yay! That sounds awesome!!! Way to just go with your gut and do it! I am sure you will absolutely love it and even though it will be completely new think of all the things you will learn while there!! Couldn’t be happier for you 🙂

  5. I lived in NYC for the last 9 years before moving to Denver last winter…it was the best time of my life and I totally miss it (I do love it here too 🙂 )
Such exciting news- so happy for you!!

  6. Congrats!! You’ll have to let us know when ya make the move…we’d love to treat you to your first taste of Chobani SoHo. 🙂

  7. I’m so happy everything worked out for you! I’m sure you’ll have no trouble making friends and meeting new people. I can’t wait to hear about your journey!

  8. You go girl! My biggest change was deciding to go to SCU lol! Its 2,000 miles away from home.. but I am excited to have a new experience! All of my friends are going to colleges around here, so I get those kinds of comments too. Everyone keeps telling me how homesick I am going to be, and I agree with them, but I know that there are so many great things ahead of me. Like my mom always tells me: “Go out and experience life. Living in different parts of the world is easiest when you are young, so don’t wait until it’s too late!” I totally agree with her (after all.. she’s a smart cookie 😉 ) We have no responsibilities (like kids or husbands lol) so now is the perfect time to explore! Ok.. I just rambled a lot.. whatever. My point is: go to New York and have fun! Make it into a life time experience! Oh and brace yourself for the winter.. it’s brutal 😉

    • Thanks Brittany! It’s funny how we are basically changing places (almost) 😉 Yes, the homesick + brutal weather might be tough but good learning! This is the best time to take chances and you have to continue to believe in yourself even in the not so great moments! Good luck at SCU! I’d say the weather’s brutal but it’s not 😉

  9. That’s so exciting! Best of luck 🙂

I’ve nominated you for a Liebster Award! Head over to my blog to read my post about it. Congrats, you deserve it 🙂

  10. OH MY GOODNESS! KAITLIN, THIS IS AMAZING/CRAZY/SOEXCITING! Props to you are taking a leap of faith. One of my good friends moved to NYC last summer after graduating, and she said it hasn’t been easy, but she was loved every second of it! I’m sure you will too 🙂

  11. Ah congrats on the big move! I love your fearlessness- perfect for a sales-type! You’ve got the right attitude here. Your 20s are supposed to be a time to move across the country (or world!). I don’t fear moving because I know that at any point, I can return. I haven’t made a big move yet, but I definitely see myself in a bigger city like NYC or SanFran in the future 🙂
