Life of Late ~ 5.12.17

As you read this I will be en route to start my 5th (or 6th since I can’t really remember) Ragnar Relay.  Back in high school and college I ran the annual Wasatch Back Relay with some friends in Utah.  Since that particular race happens in June, it was always a “fun” way to wrap up the school year.  I put that in quotes because most people would 1) call that insane and 2) it really is somewhat of a 24 hour suffer-fest.  My coworkers actually have started to just assume every PTO day I take or “vacation” is running related.  So far this year they aren’t wrong. 

Anyways, being a runner, I forgot what the pain was like and decided to do it again.  This time around has been a bit more intense since I’m actually helping the captains get ready for the race and let’s just say the universe was very against us running.  Between finding an additional 7 runners, runners dropping due to injury (total of 4 runners dropped), issues with driving insurance, and more injury, it’s been a fun time.  I don’t start until later this afternoon and then I will embark on a total of 22 miles (9 + 3 + 9).  Now if I don’t get kicked off the finish line (there’s a slight chance we may not make it based on timing…) it’ll be a grand success.  I’ll have to check back in next week to let you know the result.

May Highlights ~ 5.27.16

Just as I was about to write my weekly (almost weekly) life of late post, I realized that this was the LAST FRIDAY OF MAY.  But really, how in the world have we already reached a full 5 months of 2016?  Spring has arrived and really before we know it, summer will be here – hot and humid in all of its glory.  You know, with a few days of heat already, I’m wishing I lived closer to a beach (or pool).  Thank goodness I sleep right under the air conditioner and oh spend 90% of my day inside underneath fluorescent lights (sarcasm people. all sarcasm). Hey, I can thank my lucky stars that my office has wonderful air conditioning.  I’m sure there are some that can’t say the same.

But onto what I have been doing the last few weeks.  Oh there is always a bit of running and eating going on, but some other fun things in between.  It may be the same ‘ol same ‘ol stuff that I post about but it’s what brings me joy.  Jordan from Balanced Blonde made an excellent point about the purpose of a blog.  There are many people who start a blog with one theme in mind – food, fashion, travel, etc and some people are able to monetize their content.  To those people I say well done.  Although I’d like to consider my own blog as a lifestyle blog since it pretty much documents my style of life.

It all comes down to what I am passionate about and that’s what I write here and share with you.  So sit tight because this is turning out to be a long one 🙂

^^ Birthday run to brunch bash.  I organized a fun run around parts of the Brooklyn Half course and it just so happened to be the day after my birthday.  We then made our way to an epic hole in the wall joint that serves some of the best biscuits around.  Now I’m not an expert so we can call them the best biscuits around Prospect Park.

^^ But really, I’m game to go back for a snack and maybe even a bloody mary.  I’m not usually a boozy bruncher but apparently those too are some of the best around.

IMG_6996^^ Still ever so grateful for the friendships I have made here in this city.  As Ali mentioned in her blog (I know I mention her a lot but she speaks words of wisdom and she shares my birthday so obviously I’m biased), finding November Project was a godsend.  I have learned to push myself, learned how to relax, and made genuine friends in this strange city.

IMG_7220^^ When you need a snack and the dynamic duo come to your rescue.  Thank you Starbucks and Pinkberry.  It’s quite funny how my body reacts to sugar now that I don’t eat as much of it.  Sure, sure if you follow me on IG/Snapchat or this blog you may be rolling your eyes but what that really means is I used to eat a WHOLE bunch more.  Anyways, I’ve figured out a little trick where if I drink straight black coffee, I can stop slow some of the nasty side effects.  Ok mostly slowing the sugar crash.

IMG_7229^^ A new watch for my birthday with only the best and brightest blue wristband.  I also discovered that Mile Posts had created a Garmin interface with the runner movement phrase “I Run this Body”.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with this, it’s a movement (trending with a hashtag and clothes to match) that celebrates runners of all types – all speeds, all body shapes, and all levels.

^^ One AMAZING kale salad from Westville.  My first time dining at the east village location and boy was it love at first bite.  The kale was shredded and dressed and mixed with walnuts, blue cheese, and cranberries.

IMG_8501 (1) ^^ Last weekend Lindsay’s family (at least the girls) came out to visit and I was lucky enough to tag along on Sunday.  We started up at the Boathouse with a truly delicious brunch (frittata for the WIN), some time spent wandering Central Park, and then down along 5th Avenue with a stop inside Tiffany’s.

^^ Absolutely ADORING my birthday bouquet from my friend Liz.  She ordered some of my favorites – Gerber daisies – from a new company called Bouqs.  What’s great is that they are 1) eco friendly and 2) cut to order.  I swear, those flowers lasted longer than I have ever had a bouquet last.

IMG_7219^^ After my very quick trip to LA for Meghan’s graduation, I saw this at LAX.   Now remind me why I’m living in a concrete jungle and not by the beach? 😉  Thank goodness I’ll get my ocean fix this weekend when Lindsay and I go to check out not one but two seaside escapes.  We both agree that we are spoiled by our proximity to favorite Laguna Beach back in California but since that’s not an option, we must venture out and try new things.  At least for now.

Something About Turning 25

It’s a big day.  I can now rent a car without all those additional added fees.  Winning!  But in all reality, hitting another year and milestone and I’m in a very happy place.  I have started to settle into my skin, my personality, and most days my body.  😉  I have found a tribe of people that makes me feel at home.  I have many friends who understand me and my quirky personality, but also challenge me to be a better person and help me loosen up.  Type A personality thank you very much.

I’m beyond lucky to have so many people to look up to, bounce ideas off of, and just hang out with.  I wanted to write all the ways in which I’ve grown and what I’ve learned over the past few months and years buuuuut somehow it’s not coming together as I planned.  I wanted it to be something like Ali’s blog and her view of her birthday and her thirties so how about “yeah what she said but for my 20’s.”  Cool.

But let’s be (somewhat) original and have some fun.

  1. Every age has its ups and downs but that’s life.  Challenge makes you stronger.
  2. Ice cream is never a bad idea.
  3. When you get your hair cut, you HAVE to go out that night.
  4. Attachment brings unhappiness.  Just be aware – Francesca Bove
  5. Goof around

Life of Late ~ 5.8.15

It’s a May miracle and I have published four posts in one week. SHOCKER!  There was supposed to be another one on Philly yesterday buuuuut I’m saving finishing it for next week.

What’s new in this corner of the world wide web?  Well, there were some birthday celebrations, some awesome workouts, and some hard core work action.  Glad to say, presentation finished (and I may have sweated through my shirt…thank goodness for the bright JCrew sweater to hide everything) and it’s the home stretch to Scandinavia.

There will be a blogging hiatus but don’t fear, I will come back to bombard you with fantastic photos.   That and my Instagram feed should stay pretty up to date.  #hashtagsforlife  I’m not sure if Meghan realizes what she is in for 😉  So, while I may not be posting much abroad, my friend Alexis is dedicated enough to document her wonderful adventures to London and more here.  I’m going more for the digital detox and hopefully (super fingers crossed) more sleep on the trip.

Honestly this year has been a blur and too damn amazing.  I would be lying if I didn’t say I was obsessed with NP, the culture, the people. (but you probably already knew that)  I’m blessed to be able to call these gals my friends and role models.  For the first time, I have a whole bunch of older brothers and sisters to look up to 🙂

Thanks to our friend Dan, we’ve been able to travel north of Manhattan (comfortably in a car) for a long-run change of scenery.  The track/forest loop up there is about 3 miles, so a simple 3×3 on the weekend makes for a nice Saturday morning.

One of the real reasons I run  or continue to run (besides the feeling of accomplishment and other health benefits) is to eat.   And eat I do (everything in moderation…including moderation).

What I have bookmarked on every computer is this list of “44 Frozen Treats You Need to Try in NYC this Summer“.  Done and done.   Will you be joining me?

Many people like to run for fun and others for weight loss.  So what if I told you you could have your cake and eat it too?  As in chocolate cake for breakfast could help you lose weight?  Of course you can’t really take my full advice and probably should 1) read the entire article and 2) look further into the matter and 3) consult any type of dietician, etc.  But really, I’m game (even though I don’t like cake).

 That’s right, another November Project team pre-race photo.  This one was from the Run As One 4-Miler in Central Park.  Good ‘ol Jason (the only boy) was a trooper and posed with all the lovely ladies of NP.

Sooooo, my buddies are going to Calle Ocho for unlimited sangria brunch.  This has been a place that I have wanted to go for a very long time because I absolutely love sangria.  That and prosecco and I’m a happy camper.  But, seeing as I have very little self control around sangria, am not drinking for a month (prepping for the next half), and actually have to pack for my trip to Scandinavia (hello laundry that hasn’t been done in weeks), I’ll have to pass.  But with flavors like this – “TROPICAL” (Mango, Pineapple, Lemon Grass, Passion Fruit, Rum), “PUNTA CANA” (Mamajuana Hispanola, Peaches, Oranges, Pineapple, Rum) and “HAVANA BANANA” (Coconut, Bananas, Lychees, Coconut Rum), I will certainly have to make a trip back.

Want a good reason to laugh out loud?  Read this entire Buzzfeed article about a dad that tried social media for a week.  I read it for the first time in my little office cubicle (during a work break! I swear!) and was dying.  Maybe it’s my type of humor but I couldn’t stop laughing.  It was so bad that I had to hold a sweatshirt over my face so I wouldn’t disturb anyone or  bring (too much) attention to myself.

Another reason to laugh (at me)?  I purchased a Road ID last week because there was a mega-sale going on.  Well the good news is that I purchased a super cute turquoise band simply because it’s the best color ever.  The bad news is that I decided to put my cell phone number instead of my mom’s cell phone number on the chip.  Blonde moment.

^^ what I have been jamming out to on Pandora during my long runs.  Usually I try to run music-less, especially since that’s the plan for my half marathon.  But, sometimes I cave and then grace the island of Manhattan with my lovely voice and amazing dance moves.  Seriously – the bottom middle song gets me going like no other.  Good stuff.

Speaking of half marathons…mine is in two weeks. Yikes!  But after cruising down Broad Street and running one of the fastest long distance races in my life, I think everything should work out a-okay.  Let me just note that Megnan and I decided to sign up for one of the largest half marathons in the world.  This should be interesting.

another day and another year older.  it’s safe to say this could be the best birthday to date or at least that i remember.  i will have spent my morning at two november project workouts — doing what i love with people who make me smile.  i will be celebrating with friends all week and am off to explore scandinavia in just under two weeks.  i have learned to live in the moment and deal with stress and disappointment.  i have been fortunate to have such a close and supportive family and am finally learning what it means to have confidence in myself.  my favorite phrase of late — “you do you”.

with that, here’s my list of things to do and focus on in the year to come

1. start the day with something that i’m grateful for
2. invest in the relationships that matter
3. take a solo trip
4. ride a segway
5. get involved with a charity
6. travel somewhere that i have never been
7. learn to ask for help
8.  wear sunscreen and moisturizer every day
9. enjoy being single
10. meditate (mindfulness) for 10 min/day for 1 month
11. spend more time living in the moment and less time worrying
12. learn to poach an egg
13. run a speedy half marathon…push for sub 1:40
14. send one piece of snail mail a month
15. try a month of the whole 30 eating plan
16. go an entire weekend without technology (at least phone/computer)
17. sign up for my first marathon
18. be genuine and happy for others
19. take a vacation with my best friends (or two)
20. complete 20 acts of kindness
21. learn to make a souffle
22. run 2 more half marathons (continue my goal of 1 in every state…CA and NY check!)
23. make my blog self hosted
24. do what i love and love what i do

Life of Late ~ 5.1.15

Happiest of May to you all!!  I’m in quite the good mood maybe because it’s May, maybe because it’s Friday, and maybe because it’s my birthday next week. That’s right.  Yours truly is almost one year older and oh so much wiser 😉 Well, in true Kaitlin form, let’s start the weekend with a whole lot of random and wonderful information.

This whole joke about November Project #WorldTakeover?  No joke.  It’s real.  Here’s a clip from an Asian television station about our workouts.  I may have watched the clip a few too many times in order to spot every person I know.

All smiling faces and my back around 0:38/1:24.  Bouncing, hugs, good looking people.  What more could you ask for?

I decided to take an online quiz (because what’s a better method to procrastinate on work or going to bed?) and what do you know, Anna is my spirit character.  Not only is it quite accurate, but my family already calls me Anna.  Good stuff.  Who’s your Disney spirit character?

draw and juiceWouldn’t this have been a fabulous way to spend your Sunday?  I wasn’t able to make it because I was busy racing in Central Park but might have to gather my girlfriends to make an artsy brunch of our own.  Think about it – delectable scones, coffee, and doodles for days.  Sounds absolutely divine.  That or having a flower arranging party (Well Traveled Wife) for your birthday.  Wouldn’t that be lovely?

Fun fact – I don’t really like candy and I don’t really like cake (mug cakes are in a different universe so those don’t count).  I mean, I eat cake but that’s usually because it’s there.  Terrible excuse and I know most health columns would tell me to just not eat it and save up for something I truly love.  But I might be able to to make the case for this cake.  I mean, a surprise in the middle?  How much better could it get?

Oh wait, if it was an ice cream cake, that would top the charts.  Ok, I figured out how I’ll celebrate my birthday.  With an ice cream cake.  Don’t worry, my life isn’t that tame.  It’ll be 2x November Project workouts + work + ice cream cake and then finish it with a mega work presentation the next day.  Oh I wish the last part was a joke.

Did you know you could order a coffee of the month?   Blue bottle does have some of the best so once I own my own coffee pot (and stick around long enough to drink my own brew) I’ll certainly be signing up for this package.  For now, I’ll continue to spend the $2 a day on my cup of joe.

It doesn’t look like I’ll be able to catch much sleep in the next couple weeks – between working on company projects and jetting off to run (this weekend is the Philly Broad Street 10-miler).  But, all is good because in just two week’s time I’ll be on my way to Scandinavia for a 10-ish day adventure (not to mention break from technology and sitting on my rear).
