Life of Late ~ 7.8.16

Well it looks like I have jinxed myself believing that we could get through a summer without humidity.  Mother Nature is probably laughing and thinking “as if”.  I’m talking it is SO HUMID.  I have beads of sweat dripping down my forehead the minute I walk outside and those spur of the moment thunderstorms make for a lovely walk home. Nothing like an east coast summer, right?

My plans of late have been organized anywhere from 2 to 24 hours before hand, which is quite different than growing up where we had everything planned out to the hour.  Each method has its positives and negatives but I’ve had to rely on more  “fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants” schedules here in the city.  I figure there are so many people coming and going, so many people asking each other plans so they can figure out what best suits their interests and schedules, and hey, if no one else wants to go somewhere I can do it on my own.  #independence.

^^ Hometown BBQ with some friends.  We arrived to the Brooklyn joint around 4pm, which was perfect since I needed all those hours following the meal to digest.  Surprisingly there were quite a few parties already eating so they must have had the three day weekend BBQ plan in mind as well.  Looking back, I definitely give the cornbread, brisket, and potato salad two thumbs up.  The mac and cheese was solid but nothing seems to beat the Whole Foods spread.

IMG_8514

^^ Fast forward to Saturday morning after consuming a whole lot of water and TUMS, I met up with some November Project friends to go hiking.  I plan on doing a photo dump later this week since it was a neat experience.  But the soup to nuts version is that we took a train up to Tuxedo, finagled our way to a lake somehow, logged over 8 miles, and were back in the city by 5:30.  To think that I usually sit at my desk for that long…

^^ Another foodie adventure to Lil Frankies where an empty stomach and wallet of cash is necessary.  It’s actually not too pricey  but it is cash only.  You MUST get the burrata and lemon pasta.

When I’m home in a few weeks, I am thinking that some ice cream will be in order (when is it not?)  I would love to check off one or two of the top places to get ice cream in Los Angeles and having already been to Milk, it’s looking like Salt & Straw or Paradis in Montrose.  I’m 99% sure this location is actually related to the Paradis in Copenhagen!

November Project ~ “You’re more than what you do, you’re how you treat people” >> Another transition in leadership in the SF tribe with a so-long post, definitely worth shedding tears over.   To those thinking that they need to find some meaning in their job, their day to day, or whatever it may be – read this.  It’s just yet another reminder that we are multi-faceted human beings and are defined by so much more than our jobs.

Great Big Story ~ How cool would it be to work for something that produces this content?  Anyways, there was a short about Bodie, “The Ghost Town that Time Forgot“.  My parents took us on a short visit one time because it’s located right near our favorite mountain spot – Mammoth Mountain, snug in the Sierra Nevadas.  It also happens to be the namesake of our dog Bodie!  Take a look – the clip is less than 2 minutes long.

Currently Watching >> Whatever I can find on television that catches my attention.  Once I worked my way through ‘Grace and Frankie‘, it was onto ‘Orange is the New Black‘ (OMG…this season), and then … crickets.  Similarly to reading, it takes me awhile to find a show or novel that catches hold.  Once I do find something that I love, I’m hooked and terribly disappointed when it is over.   Other shows and documentaries include:

  • ‘Fed Up’
  • ‘Forks over Knives’
  • CNN’s ‘The Sixties’
  • ‘Uncle Buck’
  • ‘Seinfeld’

I’ve tried to get into older series like ‘The Twilight Zone’, the original ‘Star Trek’, Hulu’s 11.22.63, and even ‘Scandal’ but those are still sitting in my queue.

IMG_8206

^^ Last Sunday’s bRUNch! After five or so miles in the heat, I was ready for some ice cream or rather three full lemonades and then ice cream.

IMG_8268

On the actual fourth of July, I took a slow jog over the Brooklyn Bridge to meet my friend Jackie for a strength class of epic proportion.  It kicked our a$$ that’s for sure.

After a brunch at Le Pain, I made my way to the west side to hang out with friends, play the game Codenames, and earn a nice little sports bra tan-line.  That will be oh so attractive in my bridesmaid dress later this summer.  Although who knows how bad it’ll be by the end of the summer, so I’ll probably have to find some good spray tanner.

IMG_8270

^^ That evening I got together with a couple of different friends and we had a summer salad soiree. Between Annelise’s adult fruit salad, Melissa’s divine deviled eggs and my Greek salad, we were set!  Of course there were a few other items to make for quite a potluck spread for the three of us.  Our thought was to snack until the fireworks went off around 9:30 but of course we had consumed everything by 7:45 and the rain started to pour down around 8:45.

IMG_8569IMG_8566

^^ This is the FDR, which is NEVER this clear.  Not even at 11pm when I’m in an uber back from the airport.  Nope.

IMG_8255IMG_8572

^^ Despite the semi-surprise rain shower (it was supposed to rain at 11pm, not 9pm), we hopped back into Annelise’s apartment and then back out in time to see the Macy’s spectacular.  Successful check off the bucket list!

Life of Late ~ 2.5.16

FriYAY!  Welcome to this corner of the world where I work and workout.  I have one more week and then it’s a wonderful three day weekend (thank you United States presidents) and I’ll be off to Charlotte!  But now, let’s start the day with some random links and a hodge-podge of pictures.

IMG_5051

^^ Let’s all ooooo and aaaaaahhh over a non-filtered view of the Central Park reservoir.  I took it along my commute from speed intervals to work through the park.  Boy, I could never grow tired of this view – always putting a smile on my face, especially with all the ducks floating around.

IMG_5099

^^ This week has been filled with desserts upon desserts upon desserts.  Ok, it really stems from the fact that I’ve been out on two client outings and one restaurant week dinner with Lindsay and each one included dessert.  How could I pass up on something so special?  To be honest, the cookie above was somewhat a disappointment – too crispy and grainy and crumbled too easily.  It should have been a biscoff or cookie butter cookie for sure.

IMG_5059

^^ Dessert at Scarpetta was a MUCH better decision.  Most of the table went to town on the booze, but I decided to hold out for the last course and between the cheesecakes and valrhona chocolate cake, I was in seventh heaven.

IMG_4972

^^ Because I run (workout) to eat.  And have fun.  And fulfill my social life.  Would you believe that the picture above and picture below were less than a week a part?  IT WAS 50F IN FEBRUARY!!!  I actually told myself that this winter would ultimately decide my fate and it’s not looking half bad.  Thank you global warming.

IMG_5101^^ How’s this for a meme?  See I can make fun of myself (though I actually made the meme…)  See, we are lucky to have pictures from NP workouts and I was secretly glad this was caught this on camera.  Shall I make it a dating profile?  Oh and in terms of running, I don’t want to jinx myself but the last few runs have actually felt really good. I’m not sure what the reason may be – maybe integrating bread back into the diet. 😉

^^ Tooooootally digging my new Lululemon running crew.  We have been meeting on Saturday mornings at 9am out in Brooklyn and so it has been perfect running around 4-5 miles over the Manhattan Bridge and then 4 more around Brooklyn with these folks.  I’ve even made a few more friends and learned of a few more good book titles to read!

IMG_4996

^^ Though I don’t always have a need for syrup, I love strolling through our farmer’s markets to see the goods and how cute the packaging is.  Got to love that small town feel in the big city.

12615667_1049561285067128_8808768128327394367_o

^^ NP Love.  Last week’s bridge day was tough but these gals made it worth it.  There are definitely those days where I’ve considered just sleeping in (yes my body actually might be asking for that) buuuuut I never regret going to NP.

IMG_4942

That about wraps up another week of working out (oh and work) and epic views.  As for this weekend, I plan to see the latest Nicholas Sparks movie, go on a long run, test out a new breakfast spot (between the Egg Shop and Two Hands), dine out at Lilia in Williamsburg (SO EXCITED), and finish it off with some sort of viewing of the Super Bowl.

What are you up to this weekend?  Are you rooting for the Panthers or Broncos?

Life of Late ~ 1.29.16

Happy last Friday of the month!  Very original start, I know but here we are one month into 2016 and how’s it looking for you?  Those resolutions still on track? 😉 Well, thankfully with February 1st on Monday, there’s a chance to reboot and refocus (I’d like to spend less time on my phone and be more present!).  Here are some of my favorites so far.

Also, with Groundhog Day on Tuesday, you can really hone in  whether you have an addition 6 weeks to work on that summer bikini body.  Just kidding.  Sort of.

IMG_4455

^^ Best.Saturday.Schedule.  Running (or working out in some form) and then popping by a Juicepress (or two), and brunch with friends.  Now I’m normally not a beet fan, but this juice has me hooked.  I think it has to do with the ginger and lemon combo, something to make it so scrumptious. (now how often do you hear that about a juice?)

^^ Exploring one of the best vietnamese joints – Lucy’s – in Brooklyn with Marnie and Lindsay 🙂  You really do only have two or three choices between the banh mi and pho but oh the love they put into those dishes.  I went with the brisket pho, sub out noodles and add extra bok choy.  Mmmmm delish and oh so filling when it was starting to get chilly outside.

MY NEW FAVORITE RESTAURANT.  A couple of friends and I were on our way to the Justin Bieber dance class when we happened to pass Tacombi in Flatiron.  We only had a hot second to eat dinner before dancing the night away and this couldn’t have been more perfect.  Tacos + guacamole + horchata oh my.

IMG_4629

^^ Serious flavor packed into that meat and the atmosphere was casual and so inviting.  I asked for the meat with no tortillas (not much of a fan of corn tortillas and this whole “whole30” thing going on…ok horchata was a cheat treat) and the waitress replied “I’ll see what I can do but the kitchen runs us, not the other way around”.  I just laughed because that’s a great answer.  The kitchen was kind and did serve sans tortillas though 🙂

IMG_4699

^^ Appreciating the view as I sprinted down the East River Path and trying my best to keep up with my friend Marnie.  She is training for the Boston Marathon and I offered to join the last 7 miles (at 8min) pace of her run.  Well, things don’t always turn out as planned and we ended up doing 8 miles at 7:40 pace.  I was cursing to myself most of the way down as it was 20F (feels like 11) and I was dressed like a marshmallow.  But, if I can run like that and dressed like a marshmallow, should be good for the next half in Phoenix, right?

IMG_4768

^^ Eating the rainbow at the local Sweetgreen.  Whenever I bring my meals to work, I’m able to keep up with the whole30 program but eating out can be somewhat of a pain, especially when all you want is avocado toast.  Thankfully Sweetgreen has oodles of options (often on the pricier side) and some of the freshest ingredients!

IMG_4902

^^ This is why I feel the need to get off my phone more.  I got on the subway and saw every.single.person on his or her phone.  No, people don’t normally chat on the subway but this is just a condensed example of how every other aspect of life seems to be.  GET OFF YOUR PHONES PEOPLE (yes, I was on my phone to take this…besides the point)

IMG_4915

^^ Just me and my desire to make the perfect snow angel before hibernating during Blizzard Jonas.  Good times.

Life of Late ~ 7.24.15

Friday. Friday. Friday.  Who is ready for the weekend?  Our department happens to be participating in “Summer Fridays” and each person has a four different Fridays assigned to them to take off.  (Side note/question – do these happen around the country or is New York just unique like that?)  Today happens to be one of mine and by the time this is published, I will have been to November Project at Staten Island (well, maybe just working out on the Staten Island Ferry) and hopefully eating breakfast while watching the Today Show.  I’m also off to explore Coney Island, so stay tuned for a little post in the near future.  For now, here are some links and thoughts that I have been hoarding the last month in my drafts folder.

Normally I don’t post stuff like this buuuuut I want to thank everyone who commented online/offline about Monday’s post and what home means to you.  Sure, we like to be in control, but life has ups and downs and you know, things will work out.   A couple of the best conversations following Monday’s post occurred with people I had met through NP.  One – knowing they read the post and two – hearing their thoughts just made my day and reminded me how much NP has meant to me thus far.

IMG_1199

^^ I’m really starting to explore the rooftop scene in New York and let me tell you, it’s pretty darn cool.

^^ SKEEBALL ROUND 2

HELP ME UNPLUG FROM TECHNOLOGY! I am so addicted to my phone and am hoping Greatist’s 31 tips can provide some insight or tricks to stepping away from the pixelated screens that seem to be omnipresent.  (I actually downloaded Headspace meditation app but have yet to use it) There’s the idea that technology enables us to be connected to everything and everyone, but as Lululemon points out in “The Paradox of Connection“, we may be establishing or relying on purely superficial relationships.

Also, my apologies to my friend Sam for sending the above skeeball picture to myself immediately after it was taken, just so I could have it on Instagram.  Apparently that was her intent as well.  Oops.

IMG_1214 ^^ Thank goodness for being back in NYC and having access to countless Juice Press shops.  Green is the new black and every Saturday means #willrunforjuice time. (also notice the fitbit has returned!!! The old fitbit is roaming around New York City)

IMG_1227 ^^ What do you know, we actually went into Brooklyn for this view 🙂 Hanging out with some girlfriends who either stem from California or went to school in California.  #westcoastlove

Yes I always say I am on a sugar cleanse .  Yes I will still want to visit every single NYC sweets stops.  Thank you Pure Wow for making me drool over the best sweets in every NYC neighborhood. Thankfully I’ve already checked of Levain Bakery, People’s Pops, Bread’s Bakery, and City Bakery.  Only 25 to go.  Anyone interested in testing out the vegan Peace Food Cafe with me?

talenti^^ Speaking of sweets, who doesn’t love Talenti?  I saw this link on Facebook and Refinery29 called “Flavorize Me” where you submit information based on your social networks (just sign your life away to technology already) and it spits out your personal flavor.  Our apartment is slightly obsessed and I have to say, an added bonus of eating so much gelato is the fact that we can use the container for leftovers or overnight oats!  Sadly I haven’t had gelato in almost 7 months but then maybe that’s for the better.  #bikiniseason

Why does eating “healthy” have to be so complicated?  Greatist is rolling out some 19 foods that we think are healthy but are often quite the scam.  So sad, so sad.

IMG_1251 ^^ Maybe if I pair running w/ eating sugar, it’s ok?  Everything in moderation.  Running nine miles to enjoy this brown butter donut + ice cream sandwich?  Worth it.

For those times that I had to hit snooze or straight-up missed my alarms this week –  Greatist’s take on snooze vs. working out.  Normally I am up and at ’em, working out before sitting on my rear all day at work.  But, when the lack of sleep starts to affect my attitude, concentration and will power, it’s time to reevaluate my sleep patterns.  It’s also good to note that athletic performance can and often will suffer with too little sleep.

IMG_1273

^^ Does living in the city for 2 years count?  I hear that you are really supposed to live in a city for 7 or 8 years before you become a “citizen” or resident but I doubt I would ever be accepted into the east coast blood.  Plus that would mean abandoning my California ways.  (aka owning more colored pieces of clothing than black and inserting “dude” or “stoked” into some of my sentences…no shame)

Life of Late ~ 7.3.15

For once it looks like I will be starting this Friday post off with a whole lot of ramblings and links to share rather than bombarding you with photos.  Will have to see which format I like better and which is more/less overwhelming.  In all honesty, I just didn’t take too many interesting pictures this week, so posting for quality rather than quantity 🙂

Lately I have been in the mood to switch up my workouts mostly because I am a proud  member of Equinox (thank you mega-corporate rate) and I want to get my money’s worth.  Believe me, if I had to pay the normal fee, that would so not be happening.  But, thanks to my company and the fact that there is one in the basement of my building, things are working in my favor.  Plus, they have chilled/scented towels, fresh towels to use while working out and for showers, excellent hair dryers, and premium Kiehl’s body wash/hair products.  My daily showers are almost worth the membership fee on it’s own!

Anyways, from total body conditioning to barre burn to cardio kickboxing, I am more sore than I have been in a long time.  I also have realized I have muscles that have not been properly exercised in ages!  Meaning it hurts to walk or squat.  Please don’t make me do more squats or lunges.  Also, my kickboxing form is embarrassing. I can’t get my leg higher than one or two feet off the ground.

I have also been craving fresh fruits and vegetables and all the fun recipes on Pinterest but not wanting to spend any money on groceries or spend any time cooking.  Thus, I end up with some healthy fast food for lunch or Trader Joe’s green juices and a whole lot of grilled vegetables/kale medleys.

IMG_0553

^^ new food obsession. the chipotle for Mediterranean food.

On another note, I found out that we get about 5 extra days off!  Our department distributed a schedule where they assigned each person a certain set of Fridays off this summer.  I am SO STOKED!  I would much rather have an entire day off than just a half day.  Knowing me, I will still be going to November Project bright and early and then probably take a trip to the beach or try to set up another trip.  Shoutout to Sarah and maybe the Baltimore tribe???

^^ Finding some of the best tile artwork in the NYC Subways.  What strikes me as funny is that I have gotten so used to relying on public transport that I haven’t really used a car (besides a few taxis) in over a year!

Oh and apparently it’s national BLUEBERRY MONTH!  Struggling to figure out how to celebrate?  Well besides scrolling through Pinterest for days on end, spend some time in these wild articles here.  If you are like me, you will be drooling and dying to try every single recipe on the page.  Blueberry muffins (the Betty Crocker kind) are a childhood favorite but these days I opt for blueberries in the form of smoothies, overnight oats, and stuffed into my pancakes 🙂  So, in honor of the blueberry month, enjoy this video:

Lastly, have a fantastic weekend and 4th of July!  I spent last year down at the Jersey Shore, but this year I was able to fly home and am already soaking up the hot hot California sunshine in Mammoth Lakes 🙂  (note: I may have jinxed myself by pre-scheduling this post and we may be encountering some freak rain showers in the mountains.  thank you east coast for following me back west. not)  Looking forward to some good ‘ol altitude running, hiking, coffee, Mammoth Freedom Mile, and hopefully fireworks.

What are your plans for the 4th of July weekend?

Life of Late ~ June Favorites

Quick.  Think fast.  How would you summarize the last 6 months?  How about the last month?  Exciting, adventurous, optimistic?  Maybe I should just pick up a dictionary and thesaurus at a bookstore to help improve my vocabulary.  Now if I could explain everything via songs or GIF files, that would be truly amazing.  Alas, I can’t (always) and so I turn to my other method of expression – pictures.  It’s crazy to think that just yesterday I was running over the Randall’s Island footbridge in 3-5 layers of clothes, just to celebrate the start of the new year with my November Project friends.  (Not that I’m really reminiscing over the cold…)

IMG_0477

But still, come Tuesday, we are finished with the first half of 2015!  That means that I have lived out on the east coast for just short of two years, I will be in the midst of my second humid summer (still not sure what’s worse – humidity or bitter cold), have made so many wonderful friends, and even more amazing memories.  The ups, the downs, the moments of pure boredom.  That’s life folks and I’m just another twenty-something learning how to function in this world.

IMG_0340

^^ flowers from one of my account executives for helping out with a million dollar idea 🙂 isn’t she sweet?  fingers, toes, and limbs crossed we can sell it through!  (PSA: the flowers are still on my desk…the daisies may have passed on, but those green objects are holding strong, a solid 3 weeks in! don’t worry mom, I’ll throw them out when they smell)

IMG_0367

^^ may not have bought into their juice cleanse (yet) but am loving all sorts of green juices and smoothies – especially in this humid weather!

IMG_0454^^ work event at Escape the Room (“Agency” Midtown…much harder apparently than the downtown location) – We did not escape 😦

IMG_0469

^^ when you are invited to dinner at a fancy schmancy restaurant like the STANDARD GRILL, you definitely experiment with the cocktail list.  this here was the SIMPLY(RED), which definitely falls on the sweeter side.  my advice is to go for the THE PROFESSOR & MARY ANN {Gin, Strawberry-Champagne Shrub, Lime, Prosecco} … extra points if you know where the name comes from (I grew up with it…the reruns that is)

(the guys definitely won the prize here!) not that I coordinate my workout clothes on any other day…

IMG_0567

^^ my hometown has a mini-version (obviously mini since nothing compares to NYC), which I do love, but music in THE Central Park was a whole different ballgame.

IMG_0568my instinct is that every event is classical, which isn’t exactly my favorite, but going once made for a check on the bucket list

IMG_0579

^^ my kind of happy hour. I met up with a bunch of Thetas who are living in the city and since some of them are not 21, we settled on something sweet.  SNOWDAYS shaved cream is one of those blossoming trends and if you ever find yourself in the east village (10th & 1st), test it out.

also, apparently if you add a few half dozen hashtags to your instagram, you acquire a lot more (random) likes.  though, I still haven’t come close to hitting the numbers that my college-aged cousins hit.  how in the world do they do that?  kids these days.

IMG_0585

^^ that time I traveled to Hoboken for a workout.  yep, the lengths that we go to for our november project workouts.  I have to say, I do love that city, even with the fog and humidity settling down on it.

IMG_0618

^^ I can’t thank NP enough for the places that I have been able to visit and the people that I have been able to meet.  my world is that much larger and I consider myself more positive and that much better of an athlete because of it.  again, the tribe is inclusive and the tribe is strong.

^^ nothing beats working out and replenishing with a fresh-blended acai bowl.  I’ve always been a huge fan of juice generation, probably because it’s the first juice shop I stumbled upon in the city.  the bowls average about $10 but are totally worth it.  those of you shaking your head at the prices let me explain – 1) I am attracted to all the health foods or “health” trends (acai…supposedly is great for you) 2) once you live in the city long enough, you lose track of what’s normal to pay for food.  it’s all absurd so might as well swipe the credit card and pray that you don’t bounce (just kidding dad – I’m very good about managing my money) #worktospend

now, if anyone is seeking food testers, I’m your gal! 🙂
